The above phrase is directly quoted from one of my lecturers at college. It was a pharmaceutical microbiology lecture and the professor was describing micro-organisms and their survival instincts. He made us understand that man has been using every means possible to eradicate micro-organisms but due to their ubiquitous nature and their survival instinct, man has not been able to get total rid of them. This is not to say man has not made significant success but the point my lecturer was stressing is that it is not about the surviving organism being fit but about it been able to adapt to harsh conditions. Let’s take a closer look. There is a mother bacterium that is found in the tropics, the temperature is not favourable for it; so it develops coatings to shield itself, it brings forth an offspring that is better able to adapt to harsh temperature. Then there is a new antibacterial agent in the market, the offspring is affected but somehow it brings forth an offspring that is resistant to the antibacterial agent. On and on the newer species become more resilient and can adapt to almost any kind of condition.
That is exactly how life is: it is not about being fit, rich, knowledgeable, connected, smart or intelligent. It is about being able to adapt to every situation we find ourselves. Like they say; “when life gives you a lemon, make lemonade out of it”. Many of us step out in life with well laid plans, having a picture of what we want our lives to look like. We have stringent rules to follow, short term goals and how to achieve it, long term goals with exact dates of execution but the irony is that most times life does not turn out as planned. Life’s journey is filled with ups and downs, mountains and valleys, bumps and potholes, straight roads and bends, laughing and crying and sometimes you feel like it was all a waste putting down plans and goals.
But then it is not a waste of time planning your life, because someone without a vision is someone without a mission. So like micro-organisms one of the keys to living a happy and fulfilling life is to be FLEXIBLE.Flexibility helps you to be able to adjust and adapt. It does not mean you are to drop your goals but it saves you of the heartache of shattered dreams and the feeling of un-fulfillment.
BOTTOM LINE: be flexible while keeping your long term goal in mind.
